Major League Baseball had a sweet deal worked out with the Mayor of DC, wherein he would get them a stadium, and they would get him a team. But yesterday, a wrench was thrown in the plan when the DC city council rejected the deal as it stands, demanding that the stadium be paid for at least in part with private funds. So now MLB is throwing a hissy fit, making all kinds of threats, and refusing to negotiate.
A privately funded ballpark? I can't imagine how that could ever work.
Oh, wait, now I remember. I'm sitting a few blocks away from one. It's widely recognized as one of the three or four best parks in all of baseball.
So polls show that a majority of DC residents oppose a publicly funded ballpark. But MLB can't come up with the $150 million or so that it will take to complete this deal. In fact, some of those rich fat white men are starting to get excited about the other possibilities: if they just get rid of this team, rather than relocate it, and then get rid of another team, they'll make even more money!
In other news, today Richie Sexson signed with the Seattle Mariners for $50 million. Yes, he only played in 23 games last year after hurting his shoulder and needing two surgeries, and he's probably only about the 20th or 25th best hitter in baseball. But I guess he's worth it. Oh, and the Yankees are about to announce a $42 million deal for pitcher Carl Pavano. His career record? 57-58.
Yes, these players are worth millions, but a fair deal for the people of DC isn't.
UPDATE: Batgirl- with her own brand of sass and snark- breaks it down as only she can.
