I must sheepishly admit that this season I am something of a lapsed Jet fan. However, on the heels of the news of his retirement (due to too many concussions, the same fate as my last favorite Jet receiver), I need to give a shout-out to Wayne Chrebet.
There can't be too many guys in the past decade who have come up with more big third-down catches than the guy in the kelly-green #80 jersey. And few guys were more fun to watch - not because he was the fastest, biggest, or most graceful, but perhaps because he most certainly wasn't any of those things; he just always seemed to be the guy who was trying the hardest. A short dude with a big mouth and a lot of passion for what he does - that I can relate to.
The most memorable Chrebet catch, for me, happened five seasons ago: he dove, bobbled, and ultimately reeled in at the 1-yard line a crucial pass during the fourth quarter of a Monday night matchup with the bitter rival Dolphins. The Jets came back from a 30-7 deficit in what would later be dubbed the 'Monday Night Miracle'. An amazing game all around - and I watched every minute - but the image of that catch is the one that has stuck around in my brain.
So here's to hoping that some of those memories manage to stick around in Wayne's brain, too, and that he's able to get past the concussions and enjoy plenty of happy memories to come.
